Start with the Basics
Building a skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're dealing with oily, dry, sensitive, or combination skin, the foundation of any good routine comes down to three essential steps: cleanse, treat, and moisturise. These three pillars work together to remove impurities, address your skin's specific needs, and lock in hydration. Starting here gives your skin the best chance to look and feel its healthiest.
Understand Your Skin Type
Before you buy anything, take time to understand what your skin actually needs. Oily skin tends to produce excess sebum and may benefit from lightweight, non-comedogenic products. Dry skin often feels tight and may show flaking, calling for richer moisturisers and hydrating serums. Sensitive skin reacts easily to certain ingredients, so patch testing is crucial. Combination skin behaves differently in different zones—perhaps oily in the T-zone but dry on the cheeks. Once you know your skin type, you can choose products that work with your skin rather than against it.
The Cleansing Step
Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental pollutants that accumulate on your skin throughout the day. A gentle cleanser suited to your skin type should be used morning and night. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, consider a double cleanse: start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, then follow with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue. This approach is thorough without being harsh, and it sets the stage for the rest of your routine to work effectively.
Targeted Treatments
After cleansing, this is where you address specific concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, or dehydration. Serums, essences, and targeted treatments are applied to clean skin and allowed to absorb before moisturising. Common treatment ingredients include vitamin C for brightening, niacinamide for pore refinement, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and botanical extracts for soothing. The key is to introduce one new product at a time and give your skin at least two weeks to adjust before adding another.
Moisturise Every Day
Moisturising is non-negotiable, regardless of your skin type. Even oily skin needs hydration—it just needs a lighter formula. A good moisturiser creates a barrier that prevents water loss and keeps your skin plump and comfortable. Apply it to damp skin right after your treatment products to help seal in all the benefits. At night, you can use a richer cream; during the day, a lighter lotion or gel works well under sunscreen and makeup.
Don't Forget Sun Protection
Sunscreen is the most important anti-ageing product you can use. UV damage causes premature ageing, dark spots, and skin cancer risk. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours if you're outdoors. Make it the final step of your morning routine, after all other products have set.
Keep It Simple at First
A beginner's routine doesn't need to be elaborate. Cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen are genuinely enough to see results. Once your skin feels balanced and healthy, you can gradually add targeted treatments if you want to address specific concerns. Overloading your routine with too many products too quickly can overwhelm your skin and make it hard to identify what's actually working.
Be Patient and Consistent
Skincare results take time. Your skin cells turn over roughly every 28 days, so give any new routine at least four to six weeks before deciding if it's working. Consistency matters far more than complexity. Using the same simple routine every day will deliver better results than switching products constantly or skipping steps. Track how your skin feels and looks, and adjust only when necessary.
